Windows 8 is the latest version of Microsoft Windows released on October
26, 2012 for general availibility.
[GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE]
Windows 8 introduces a new user interface based on Microsoft's Metro
design language. It uses a Start Screen, displaying a beautiful grid of
coloured tiles . The tiles cover all the screen, enabling users to experience a
captivating full screen. The UI is minimal as it features only clean
topography, basic icons and engaging, slick animation. The tiles link to various
apps and desktop programs. By simply clicking a tile, the application fills the
screen. To switch the application, simply go back to the start screen and click
another tile, or cycling with the application 'switcher'. Swiping from the left
edge of a touchscreen or clicking in the top-left corner of the screen allows
one to switch between apps and window. Pointing the cursor in the tiop-left of
the screen and moving down reveals a thumbnail list of active apps. And also,
the windows will not overlap as everyting can be slided to give space for a new
window.
Another thing are charm bars. They are hidden menus that contain a mix of
current application and control for the computer as a whole as well as provide
access to system and app-related functions, such as search, sharing, device
management and settings. They are accessed by swiping from the right edge of
the touchscreen or pointing the cursor at hotspots in the right corners of the
screen.
A new simplified and touch-optimised settings app known as 'PC Settings'
is used for basic configuration and user settings.
[FILE MANAGEMENT]
Files Explorer enables users to open, access and rearrange
files and folders in Desktop view. To open File Explorer, click the folder icon
on the taskbar in Desktop view.
File Explorer consists of:
1. Navigation Buttons(Back and Forward buttons to navigate
between folders)
2. Ribbon(allows users to access different tabs with options
for viewing, sharing, and organising files as well as common shortcuts such as
copy and paste)
3. Address Bar ( to see
the path of the current folder)
4. Search Bar ( to search for specific files or folders)
* The search tool tab gives users access to advanced search
options, which allows them to limit by file type, size and date modified.
5. Navigation Pane ( to navigate quickly between folders)
6. Files( Users can double-click a file to open it in the
default application)
View Tab is used to change the way files are displayed
within a folder and sort the files.
Libraries are collections of content that can be easily
accessed through File Explorer. There
are four basic libraries for Windows 8 – Documents, Pictures, Music and Videos.
Many apps on the Start Screen use libraries to display their content. The apps
are optimised for media, so it is easy to play music, watch videos and view
photos.
[SECURITY AND MAINTENANCE]
Windows 8 Security Features include:
User Account Control warns users when a program or user
tries to change the computer settings. The screen will temporarily locked until
the admin confirms the changes.
Windows Defender provides anti-virus and malware protection
to the computer including scanning any potentially harmful apps and
double-checking each file or app without slowing down the computer.
Windows Smartscreen notifies users with a full-screen
warning whenever the computer detects a security threat from a file or app.

Windows Firewall provides protection to the internet
connection. A firewall prevents an unauthorised access from external connection
and protects the network from harmful threats.
Action Centre views security and maintenance messages. If
there is any important message, the flag
icon on the taskbar will display a red X
symbol. The messages are displayed in the Action Centre pane. A red bar shows
important messages while a yellow bar shows less important messages. A button will appear to the right of a
message if there is any solution for the issue.
[APPLICATION]
Windows Store is where users download new apps for Windows 8
device. Most apps are designed to run from the Start Screen. To use Windows
Store, users must sign in to the Microsoft account.
